“For a brilliant forensic
linguist, crimes of the past hold clues to new series of murders in a twisting
novel of suspense by the Wall Street Journal bestselling author of A Familiar Sight.”
In a small town, a
murder pulls FBI forensic linguist Raisa Susanto into an investigation that
resembles a crime from decades ago. Exactly 25 years ago today, Alex Parker
killed his parents and then ended his own life, leaving behind a note
confessing everything.
Raisa teams up with
forensic psychologist Callum Kilkenny to read between the lines, especially
after stumbling upon some crazy comments on a conspiracy website suggesting
that Alex might have been a victim himself. These theories have caught the
attention of an inquisitive content moderator and a true-crime podcaster who's
desperate for a big break. Raisa and Callum work together to dig deeper and
uncover the truth behind these cryptic clues.
This book is absolutely captivating! Right from the start,
it hooked me with its thrilling story and fascinating concept. I couldn't help
but stay on the edge of my seat with all the surprising plot twists. The author,
Labuskes, skilfully weaves together multiple storylines and intriguing
characters with complex pasts. It's like being caught in an intricate web of
mystery that connects the present investigation to past events seamlessly.
The main character, Raisa, is such a strong and fascinating
individual. She has this amazing talent for understanding words, which adds a
unique element to the story. Her partnership with forensic psychologist Callum
Kilkenny is nothing short of thrilling, as their chemistry and complementary
skills make them a dynamic duo. Raisa's exploration of the world of online
conspiracy theories is filled with suspense, keeping you on the edge of your
seat throughout. She's a relatable protagonist, striking a perfect balance
between her strengths and flaws.
The only downside for me was keeping track of all the
secondary characters, which could get a bit confusing at times.
This discovery of a new author and series has me overjoyed,
as it expands my reading collection in the best way possible. With unexpected
twists and turns, you'll constantly find yourself guessing what will happen
next. From beginning to end, this suspenseful psychological thriller will keep
you fully engaged.
